Research is cornerstone of education & a vital part of school & university curriculum that, unfortunately has been abandoned by most of the students & education systems in Iraq. Students graduate with little or no activity in the field of research. A vacuum between graduate students & the outside world is created which leads to various problems. Everyday, new diseases appear, effects of drugs change, plants & crops face new challenges & the society faces new problems! Without research, the accumulative result will be disastrous, with no advancement in society, & no growth in the economy. Research shows more than 55% of Iraq’s population is youth, & they should be invested in. The issue isn't lack of creative youth but lack of facilities, lab equipments in most of institutions Iraq, & lack of copyright & patent software systems in the KRI. Creativity Beyond Curriculum is a research platform, that's been founded by 2 college students with the administrative staff of Hawler Medical University’s Medical Research Center being the key partner & advisor continuously monitoring the work. The platform has been conceived as an attempt to stimulate & discover the perspectives in education & research so that individuals & institutions reflect, rediscover & move towards progress. By realizing there were many students who will quench their curiosity, we took the 1st phase introducing CBC objectives by creating network between medical, pharmacy & health sciences students which were our focus. 2nd phase was training course introducing Research & Critical Thinking to the students in Aug 2017. Encouraging youth to quit being memorizing machines, get out of the box, explore beyond what’s in the curriculum. In Sep 2017, SPSS software course taught how to perform advanced statistical analysis for the students who'd already been working on their own research & got the opportunity to use the lab equipment from Medical Research Center for practical implementation. The courses were held with the help of/& taught by professors & researchers who volunteered their time to nurture a new generation of dedicated youth. The plan is collecting all the researches that will be done & organizing students conferences every year, consist of panels & seminars that will showcase the work of students. These activities will help revive the field of research & will result in a strong network of passionate youth. It'll also create solid base on which the R&D sector will be built & it'll shift the focus of the health institutes from suffering from problems to searching for solutions. The aims are to fund high quality research by bridging the researchers with funders/& stakeholders to improve healthcare system focused on priority areas, train & provide facilities & to enhance quality of education system through inculcation of creativity in educational methods to contribute towards development. CBC consists of professionals comprising 3 groups of focus: trainers, logistic supporters and facilitators. It's important to note that our mentors are peer reviewing professionals to evaluate academic work. Our government hardly provides some of the basic human rights due to the crisis facing KRG so we plan to shift our focus to the private sector & show benefits of R&D to the company & community. Long term plan is to expand this & open a Research & Innovation Center for local youth providing year long training, supervision & lab equipment. By the end of the year, a competition to be held to showcase their projects, attract local & intl investors & build partnerships to adopt their ideas. This will help the economic growth of the region providing opportunity & granted budget to the youth & the winner. The winner will also get the chance to attend an intl competition to showcase his/her idea to a broader population. This project will be in partnership with intl organizations/institution for it’s financial sustainability.
